Paediatric Occupational Therapy
Our occupational therapists help children to participate in meaningful activities or ‘occupations’ that are important to them. For children, these occupations are any tasks they do that brings meaning and purpose to their life and can include playing, learning, socialising, self-care tasks (sleeping, getting dressed), sports activities and school work. Children can face challenges in these areas due to many reasons including physical, cognitive, developmental, or emotional factors.
At Pottsville Occupational Therapy, we work collaboratively with children and their families to understand their strengths and areas of difficulty related to daily activities. We use a strengths-based approach to then develop a personalised intervention plan, using a child’s interests to address these challenges.
Through play-based activities, therapeutic exercises, sensory integration techniques, and adaptive strategies, occupational therapy helps children develop the skills they need to function independently and participate fully in their daily lives.
About
At Pottsville Occupational Therapy, we believe in a play-based approached and family centred model of support to enhance and individualise our services provided to each child.
Our interventions for children may involve:
Improving fine motor skills (such as handwriting, using a toothbrush and tying shoe laces).
Hand therapy and splinting support.
Supporting gross motor skills development (laying the foundations for completing fine motor activities) through addressing concerns with balance, coordination, spatial awareness, strength, endurance and core support.
Assisting in sensory processing skills and support.
Supporting the development of self-care skills (such as toileting, feeding, dressing and sleeping).
Developing and supporting attention skills.
Supporting social skills development.
Improving engagement in play and play skills development.
We provide intervention in the home, school or community, as we believe in supporting children and their families in the environments that need support.
Services
We offer a variety of assessments to assist in diagnostics and to ensure therapy is tailored to your child's needs. The assessments we offer include:
Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA).
Handwriting Assessment.
Sensory Processing Assessment.
School Observation.
Individual assessments, including assessing fine motor ability, gross motor ability, visual motor integration skills, motor coordination, visual perception skills, handwriting, play, cognition and impact on executive functioning, social skills and many more!
When assessments are completed, a comprehensive report is provided to clients and their carers. Education is delivered explaining results and recommendations that support the child’s engagement in their meaningful activities. Where needed, occupational therapists can advocate on behalf of clients and their families to support the implementation of recommendations in many different environments (such at school and pre-school).
