About Occupational Therapy

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) is a healthcare profession focused on helping people of all ages participate in the activities (or occupations) that are meaningful and important to them. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable individuals to engage in daily tasks, hobbies, work, self-care and social interactions to the best of their abilities, despite any physical, cognitive, developmental, or emotional challenges they may face.

Occupational therapists (OTs) work with individuals who may have a wide range of conditions or circumstances that impact their ability to participate in daily activities. These conditions can include physical injuries or disabilities, neurological disorders, developmental delays, mental health conditions, sensory processing disorders and more.

Occupational therapy aims to improve the quality of life and independence of individuals of all ages by addressing barriers to participation in meaningful activities. Whether it's helping a child learn to dress themselves, assisting an adult in returning to work after an injury, or supporting an older adult in maintaining their independence at home, occupational therapy plays a vital role in helping people live life to the fullest.
