Burns and Scar Management

Scarring from burns and traumatic injuries often leads to many adverse consequences. These can include reduced ability to participate in meaningful activity, reduced mobility and restriction of growth. Following immediate acute treatment for burns, burn therapy should commence as soon as possible and continue until scar maturation, which is commonly 12-18 months following the initial burn or traumatic injury (noting that the time to reach scar maturity varies between individuals).

The role of occupational therapy in burns and scar management is essential, as it addresses the complex physical, functional, psychosocial and vocational needs of individuals recovering from burn and traumatic injuries. Occupational therapy can help an individual to regain independence, confidence and quality of life after their injury. By focusing on holistic rehabilitation and personalised interventions, occupational therapy plays a vital role in promoting optimal outcomes and empowering individuals to thrive despite the challenges posed by burns and scars.

At Pottsville Occupational Therapy, we work collaboratively with individuals, other service providers (such as hospital services) and carers to develop a targeted and specific therapy plan. Interventions are designed to work towards identified goals. We will often see individuals after they have received their initial acute treatment for ongoing therapy and management closer to home.
